February 2025

First of all, if you’re reading this, we probably met you in 2024, and we thank you for agreeing to come on this journey with us. We learned a lot about the business of photography in 2024, and you helped us do it.

One of the things that you helped us learn is what kind of photography you liked. There are genres we need to explore further, such as nightscapes and astrophotography. We have been studying, and we’ve already booked some formal training for the summer of 2025. We have included a couple of our works in progress.

Red aurora reflecting on a pond channel

2024 was an excellent year for the northern lights. We were blessed with aurora so strong we could see it from our house, which is in a small city. When the biggest solar storm in 50 years hit, a quick trip down to Clay’s favorite local fishing spot provided us with some fantastic images. Normally we see auroras as a white light in the sky, but for this storm, we saw the same colors we captured in our camera.

We love a good dramatic moon, and we’re happy to say this year, we’ve been able to get good photos of the moon that we couldn’t get in the past. We’re quite happy with this image, but we already know we’ll be taking more photos of the moon this year. The blue cast from this image exists because we took this image during the daytime, before the sun had set.

Many people don’t think about the moon during the day, and it takes them by surprise when they finally realize that it’s up there in the sky regularly. It turns out that it’s quite fun to photograph during the day, and it gives these lovely blue notes.

You’ll see more moon photos from us over the year, because it will be a long time before we don’t love to look at the moon.

New Locations

We were recently invited to the gulf coast by friends. There’s nothing definite set up yet, but the Gulf of Mexico provides opportunities to see the night skies in a very different setting than we have here at home.

What has been confirmed is that we’ll be heading to Isle Royale this summer. The dark skies there are perfect for night sky photography, and the natural beauty of the island will make an excellent setting.

Wildlife Photography

You also showed us that you love wildlife photography. We’re definitely still learning about that genre, but it’s a subject we love. We’ll be putting a lot of effort into that this year. We’re excited about our local wildlife, and we’ll take a lot of joy in learning more about their habits and how to photograph them. We hope our planned trip to Isle Royale will also yield us some interesting wildlife images.
