We worked for years to get enough image data to get this picture to you. The moon has distinct colors to it that we can’t see from Earth, and even robotic explorers have trouble seeing. The astronauts of Artemis II made observations of the colors of the surface and they noted these colors as well. in particular, the light grey we see from Earth is a brown color to the human eye when you’re close enough.
Our moon was photographed from our driveway in February of 2026, with the eager assistance of our cat. Roughly 100 images were stacked, and the color in those images was carefully drawn out to show the mineral composition of the moon.
